GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) IMPLEMENTED BY SCDA

Sindh Coastal Development Authority has developed highly sophisticated GIS lab with the prime objective to implement an e-governance model for effective planning and monitoring of coastal region development interventions. The GIS lab is not only a worthy asset of SCDA in developing geo-database and digital mapping, but it also facilitates the Government institutions like Board of Revenue, Zulfiqarabad Development Authority, National Institute of Oceanography, Provincial Disaster Management Authority, Sindh Cities Improvement Programme and Sindh Education Reform Unit in GIS solutions of day-to-day operations.

Establishment and Functioning of GIS Lab:

The lab is fully functional and equipped with one dedicated GIS server, four workstations, a laptop, one scanner, colour and black and white printers and GPSs. GIS softwares such as ArcGIS 10.0, Erdas Imagine 9.3 and Google Earth Pro have also been purchased.

Acquisition and Processing of Primary Data:

Data regarding physical features, SSI’s, MSI’s and Mangrove plantations have been acquired, developed and processed as well as maps have also been developed.

Acquisition and Processing of Secondary Data:

The sheets from Survey of Pakistan (SOP Sheets) of Thatta & Badin Districts and satellite images were acquired, processed and converted into GIS format.

Development of Base Map:

The development of “Base Map” was also one of the main tasks of GIS which was completed successfully in the month of May, 2011.

Development of Geo Database and Web Portal:

A web-based Geo-database has been developed which provides the means to enhance the decision making for SCDA’s project management.

Report on Identification of Areas for Potential Temporal and Spatial Changes:

The GIS section has developed land use / land cover maps as well reports on the identification of potential sites for temporal and spatial change analysis. Another report i.e. “Assessment by GIS on the Ongoing Effects of the Small and Medium Scale Village Interventions and Their Effects on the Surrounding Environment” has also been completed.
